Mauraj Egyptian Maus - Available Egyptian Mau Kittens

We have kittens ready to go!

Purchasing a Mauraj Kitten

Kittens are sold as:

  • Pet Quality - Our "pets" are the result of careful selective breeding to enhance and improve the breed. Often pets will have one minor flaw that is not noticeable to the average person. Some examples:
    • The color isn't quite perfect
    • Ear set (or ear size) off a bit
    • Size of eyes
    • Minor pattern flaws
Often our animals go as "pets" simply because we may have no one waiting for a show kitten. We evaluate our babies as they mature to see if they fit our program. Through hard work, our pet quality is constantly improving! Sometimes our pet waiting list is 6 months to a year long.

  • Show Quality Alters
    • Cold or Warm bronze
    • Meet our interpretation of the CFA breed standard
    • CFA Show mentoring available

  • Breeding Quality
    • Cold or Warm bronze
    • You must meet some very stringent requirements (hybrid breeders need not bother)
    • Meet our interpretation of the CFA breed standard
    • Breeding/Cattery mentoring available

Now What?

Now that you have decided that you want an Egyptian Mau, how do you go about getting one? First read this entire page. Then fill out the questionnaire. If you have any problems please email us for a copy.

Prepare to be asked questions about previous pet ownership, your current pets and your current family situation. If I speak to you on the phone I will probably ask you those questions to make sure my babies have a good home and are well loved. We'd really prefer to meet or at least speak with you on the phone, and would love to have you stop by and see us at a show hall one day! We do care where our babies go!!!!

We try to match kitten personalities to their new families the best we can so it is important for you to answer those questions for us. We also want you to ask us questions to make sure you want to work with us. We like to maintain contact with our "extended families" and hope to be a resource for our kitten buyers for years to come.

We require you to sign a contract which states the cat will not be allowed to roam outdoors or be declawed. We will of course provide a written copy of this contract a few weeks from receiving your kitten or upon pick up.

What does mom have in here that we can take? Umm, I think we just got busted, time for the innocent look!!!

Cattery Visits

We do not allow cattery visits. Visitors can bring in germs and viruses to my cats. Many of those are airborne. Do you want a visitor bringing something in to infect a kitten you may have reserved? We also work full time as this is just a hobby. Our extra time is as precious as yours.

Deposits

Deposits are required to go on our reservation list and are taken on a first come basis! The deposits are $350 and are NON-REFUNDABLE. It is not our fault if you change your mind - we may have turned down an offer by someone else after receiving your deposit. Your deposit may be refunded upon our discretion. We will not reserve a kitten or put you on our waiting list without a deposit!

For deposits, we accept cash, money orders, PayPal and personal checks (checks via regular mail only).

Price/Payments

Please contact us for prices. For final payment we only accept cash, money orders and PayPal. The prices include spay/neuter and all required shots. Shipping is an extra charge (purely at cost which varies due to chosen air carrier and final destination). Our prices are non-negotiable and we do not sell cats with the possibility of breeding rights later.

Payments must be made 5 days in advance of shipment (or pick-up).

We retain the right to deny sale to anyone. We do care where our cats go and how the breeders we work with operate.

Show Priority

Showing cats in Arizona is rather difficult as there aren't nearly as many easily accessible shows (as on the east coast). We do prefer to place our show quality kittens with those who are willing to actively show. As it is often difficult to determine a kitten's "show prospects", we reserve the right to make a final decision on kittens up to the point of sale. Their color and spotting clarity change dramatically as they age. Also, to make matters more trying, as kittens, these cats go through at least three periods of "fuzziness" (basically coat growth) where their coats actually "fuzz" out and they become very pale. We have, however, yet to see a kitten that hasn't improved substantially as they aged, please understand this.

Spay/Neuter Policy

Mauraj practices early spay and neuter on all kittens to pet homes. We will not sell a kitten before 12 weeks of age. This is advised by CFA and just good common sense! Kittens can be picked up after 12-14 weeks. Kittens are altered when they are large enough. Some kittens grow faster and wean easier than others.

Early spaying and neutering has been practiced for over 25 years in the United States. It is safe. In fact, the kittens recover much quicker than if you wait until 6 months of age. If you wait until 6-9 months of age to alter your Egyptian Mau, you are taking a great risk of your kitten marking it's territory and learning very bad habits. You are doubling the risk of your female cat developing breast cancer at an older age, which can be fatal, if you just let them cycle ONCE!

ALL PETS AND PREMIERSHIP CATS ARE ALTERED BEFORE THEY LEAVE OUR HOUSE! NO EXCEPTIONS!

Pick-up/Shipping

New owners will need to make arrangements to pick up their kittens. Due to work and show schedules we can not transport new babies to owners on a regular basis. However, on certain occasions we can make exceptions (If we are going to a show we can meet there, or we can generally meet on the south side of the Phoenix Metro area, etc.)

We do provide shipping out of Sky Harbor Airport International Airport in Phoenix, Arizona. Shipping is an extra charge (purely at cost which varies due to chosen air carrier and final destination).

Health & Welfare

Is Asthma & Cardiomyopathy still a problem with Egyptian Maus? No, but it occasionally reappears in some lines.

I have not had any cases of Asthma or Cardiomyopathy in any of my cats. The Indian and Egyptian lines were very instrumental in reducing these issues. Some people may still experience it from time to time. Please let the breeder know if your vet diagnosis it in your kitten.

Can my cat go outside?

No. We do not like our cats or your future pet to go outside. It puts them at greater risk for diseases, promotes outside door rushing, and lets everyone know you have a very beautiful cat. Cat theft is on the rise! The cats are not "missing out" on life by being kept indoors, quite the contrary! We welcome you to compare the average outdoor cat personality with that of an indoor. The outdoor cat is faced with many dangers, from a tail-pull or kick by the neighbor child to a close run in with the garbage man. A happy cat will not be the result!

Vaccinations

Kittens are vaccinated for panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis and calici virus. We do not vaccinate against FIP or FeLV (see below).

** Vaccination against FIP and FeLV will void the guarantee. This vaccination has been proven as harmful to some pure bred cats.

Reputable Breeder or Pet Store?

Beware buying a Mau from a pet store! The primary breeder of the pet store MAUS can produce more than 300 kittens a year and does not follow many of the guidelines recommended by CFA. They commonly arrive in these stores at seven to eight weeks of age! Proper/full vaccinations cannot be completed until the minimum age of 12 weeks. Unthinkable to us and other responsible breeders! Interesting enough, to travel between many states you are also required by law to have a rabies certificate. That can not be done until 12 weeks of age!

Kitten mills (belonging to a fanciers organization) are required to have their cattery inspected, but of course this is done on a scheduled day. Anyone can have their house spotless for a scheduled appointment. Some mills have even been on CFA's "referred breeder" program. They are there simply because they have paid their fee and as they have produced so many kittens that a vet (of their choice) has had to come inspect their cattery. This is required by CFA because of the production of large numbers of kittens. "Cattery of Excellence" means nothing in situations like this!

Registration Papers Provided?

You should also get a blue or yellow slip as registration papers if they are Registered via CFA. People in the past have ONLY received litter registration copies. If they can not produce a blue or yellow slip at the store just say NO!

Health Guarantee Provided?

All Mauraj kittens come with a written health guarantee. This guarantees that the cat is free from the following:

  • FIV
  • Feline Leukemia (FeLV)

Finding a Reputable Breeder

Here are some guidelines to help you in your search for an Egyptian Mau. Most breeders are "Hobby" breeders fueled by a love of their breed and are not out to make a quick buck.

  • Do they present a strong concern for both the breed standard and the history of their Mau lines?
  • Are they willing to discuss their Mau's lineage with you? This can have a serious impact on health, appearance, and temperament! --Major warning sign!!--
  • What kind of health problems have they faced? Many breeders love to say they have none - but there is no such thing with a pedigreed cat, must less a breed with a limited gene pool. You need to find a breeder who is willing to be "up front" with you and is educated enough about potential problems to be able to breed away from them. Diverse lineage is a very good sign!
  • The responsible breeder is always willing to learn more about their breed and is considered an ongoing student. Do they know anything about their breed's genetics? What are the resulting color possibilities in their litters? Why?
  • Do they provide referrals to other breeders if they don't have what you're looking for? Another MAJOR warning sign!!
  • Are they willing to educate the novice on Mau's? Will they help you enter the show world? Are they willing to be your mentor and develop a close working relationship?
  • Do they offer a health guarantee? What is included in the health guarantee? Most catteries guarantee they are free of FIP and Fluke.
  • They will ask you many questions via questionnaire, phone interview, or during a face to face visit. They will also have references. Not only are you evaluating them, but they should SURELY be evaluating you!
  • Have you quickly developed a "comfort" level with the breeder??
  • Price alone should not be a factor in the decision to buy. High prices don't necessarily guarantee high quality and a low price is often not a bargain. Find out the typical price in your area of the country.

Interested in Breeding Maus?

Those of you who are interested in breeding please read the following poem "The Miracle of Life". After reading it, if you are still determined that this is something for you, email us.

The Miracle of Life

"Come quick, come quick", their mother said "The time is getting near". She feels that when the kittens come the children should be here. She told them that a big orange Tom took "Kitty" as his wife. It's wonderful, a gift from God, "the miracle of life".

At half a year young "Kitty" feels too painful and too scared to appreciate six miracles, blind-eyed and yellow haired. But she knows these lives depend on her and nature tells her how and as she cleans them, children ask "Mom, can we go now?" But now and then for six more weeks the children visit her to play with six new magic toys made of life and fur.

The six weeks pass, the newness gone and new homes yet unfound, mom bundles up six miracles and takes them to the pound, where lovingly, with gentle hands and no tears left to cry, the shelter workers kiss them once and take them off to die. And "Momma Kitty" now she's called - mourns her loss and then, she's put outside, and of course, she's pregnant once again.

Dad tells "Kitty" STOP THIS NOW or you wont live here long! But deep inside of Momma Cat, this time something's wrong. Too young, too small, too often bred now nature's gone awry, Momma Kitty feels it too and she crawls off to die.

She too is freed from this cruel world, and from her time of strife. How harsh the truth, how high the price this "Miracle of Life"?

-By Barry Taylor, DVM

We don't offer breeding animals except to those selective people who have shown dedication to the breed. I take this hobby very seriously. Breeding cats will only be sold to select people who have shown a Mau in Premiership or are currently breedings Maus. Even if you have bred another breed I will still ask you to show in Premiership first. Showing a Mau can be a challenge due to their extreme intelligence. Quite often people have shown their dedication by buying a Premiership cat and showing it until it grands or for an entire season, or they will show one of my kids for me at a show I can not make. That way they are: learning about the breed, understanding the breed standard, learning responsible practices in working with pedigreed cats, and getting to know others that work with the breed. I suggest working closely with a mentor! This often opens doors to getting good quality animals early on.

We do not allow our cats to be used with hybrid or silver/smoke programs. That means any cat with the Mauraj prefix will not be sold/used to a breeding program for silver or smoke Maus. They will not be sold to Savannah, Bengal, Chausie, Cheetoh or the latest creation accepted by TICA. Our cats may only be bred to registered bronze Egyptian Maus. We also do not provide stud service!

There are no shortcuts to establishing a good breeding program!
